Enrollment Parent Involvement Volunteering blog

Parent Involvement

Head Start of Shawnee Mission encourages parents to be actively involved in the education of their children.

Some of the ways in which parents connect to their child’s first educational provider include:

  • Participating in the governance of the agency
  • Taking advantage of networking and socialization opportunities
  • Attending training sessions on a variety of skills needed to be a better parent and community resident

Policy Council

Our Policy Council, comprised of elected representatives from Early Head Start and Head Start parents, and the community at large, is one of the two governing bodies of the agency. The Council meets monthly to review financial and program reports and approve budgets, policy changes, program direction and staff hires.

Parent Committee/1st Thursdays

A monthly opportunity for parents and children to meet other families and interact in a positive developmental and social environment.

Positive Parenting

An opportunity for parents to enhance their learning via 4-8 week (2 hour) sessions on the following topics: Parenting, Cooking, and Money Management.

Play Groups

Regularly-scheduled Play Groups to promote developmental, educational and social involvement for parents of Early Head Start children.

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students)

Watch D.O.G.S is the father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering that organizes fathers and father figures to promote positive male role models for children and support Head Start of Shawnee Mission.

Strong Fathers

Strong Fathers-Strong Families is a training, technical assistance, and facilitation organization that is focused on strengthening children by strengthening fathers and families. Through staff training, consultation, and event facilitation, Strong Fathers-Strong Families works with Head Starts, public schools and churches, as well as other organizations. It's goal is to improve the educational environment in order that men may become more involved in the lives of their children.
